Fit and Healthy Kids Challenge Sheet Due: 10/9/06

MOVE MORE, EAT MORE COLORS, AND TURN IT OFF...
"GOVERNOR DOUGLAS, CANAAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ACCEPTS YOUR FIT AND HEALTHY KIDS FALL CHALLENGE!" Governor Douglas is inviting and encouraging all Vermont children to participate in this year's Fit and Healthy Kids Fall Challenge during the week of October 2nd -6th. He's challenging all children to Move More, Eat More Colors (fruits and vegetables) and Turn It Off (the television).

To celebrate this challenge throughout the week at school, the children and staff will start each morning with a little Get Up and Go and exercise together, and then take a Power Walk, a fifteen-minute walk after lunch. We're also encouraging healthy snacks and lunches throughout the week.

On Friday afternoon, we're planning a Community Walk, at the Canaan Rec. Park, from 12:45-1:15 and encourage all parents, the entire student body, school staff and community members to join us for the walk. Let's show our children just how important being physically active is to their overall wellness by taking this challenge together.
Governor Douglas is looking for creative schools to honor for their participation in this year's Fit and Healthy Challenge, and will choose 15 schools to walk with him in Montpelier. He also plans to visit these 15 participating schools as well. Let's make Canaan one of his chosen schools!

FUND RAISER BEGINS
Fred Capron, from American Fund Raising of Vermont, kicked off our annual fundraiser last Friday. After explaining how to fill out the order forms, Mr. Capron emphasized the importance of being safe when getting orders. There was a lot of excitement in the room when he pulled out all the prizes the children can earn with this year's fundraiser. Mrs. Brady reminded the third graders why they were raising money...not for the prizes but rather for their Ocean Adventure to Monhegan Island, Maine next May.

The third grade classroom was well visited by third graders and their families last Thursday evening during Open House and Resource Fair. Mrs. Brady thanks everyone who visited.

Spirit Animal Day in Fourth Grade
Mrs. Duke and her fourth graders invited the third graders to their classroom last Friday to help them celebrate Spirit Animal Day. Each fourth grader chose an animal to study, researched this animal, and then wrote a brief report. They also made totem poles and decorations.

Solving word problems in Math
Last week's math lessons focused on problem solving using skip counting strategies. Pictured above is an example of how one student solved the problem: If it takes 3 lemons to make one glass of lemonade, how many lemons will it take to make enough for every third grader, Mrs. Brady, and Ms. Patty?
The children were encouraged to use pictures, words, and numbers to solve their problems. They also had to make sure their problem solving strategy was obvious to anyone who looked at their work.

What’s Up This Week?

Reading: NECAP Testing

Math: This is Week 2 of Unit 2: Skip-Counting Patterns-Finding Patterns and Solving Problems Using Skip Counting. We didn't quite finish all of the lessons last week, so we'll continue into this week to solve more word problems using their skip counting booklets created last week.

Spelling: NECAP TESTING

Writing: The children will write about why it is important for them to be healthy. Using graphic organizers, the children will capture their knowledge about the subject, and then write pieces that will be sent to Governor Douglas.

Science and Social Studies: Our unit on Making Healthy Choices continues with emphases given to the Fit and Healthy Kids Fall Challenge.

Story Time: The B.F.G. was finished last Friday, and this week I'll start reading, The Witches, which is another Roald Dahl book. Be sure to ask your child to give you daily updates. This is a great book to read just before Halloween!

How many days until Halloween?
