Mohawks Clip Eagles in Season Opener

The weather played a major role in this game, but not in the way that most would expect.  It was neither rain nor snow that impacted the season opener for the Canaan Eagles and the Colebrook Mohawks, but blustery winds and powerful gusts.  Anything hit into the air was nearly impossible to judge, as several pop-ups that would normally result in easy outs found open spaces in the field.  Despite the conditions, the Mohawks were able to blow past the Eagles for a 6-1 victory.  The Mohawks did most of their damage on opposite ends of the scoreboard, plating five of their six runs in the first and seventh innings.

Jeremy Schichtle got the start for the Eagles, and appeared to still be shaking off some rust in the first inning.  The Mohawks grabbed the early lead on an RBI single off the bat of Ryan Call.  Call would later come around to score to give his team the early 2-0 lead.

Call was effective with the bat and on the mound, working the first three innings for Colebrook without surrendering a run.  The Eagles had their chances to score, but two runners were stranded in the first inning, and two more runners were picked off the second.  Pitching dominated the middle innings, as Schichtle settled into his groove.  Nate Marquis relieved Call after the third, and would only allow a single run in four innings of work.

The Eagles lone run came in the sixth.  Zack Daley reached on a wind-aided single, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on and RBI single by Connor Daley.  Marquis would then work out of potential trouble, preserving the Mohawks lead at 3-1 heading into the final inning.  The Mohawks would score three times in the seventh, with the big blow being a 2-run double off the bat of Ryan Rossitto, to put this game away.

Call and Marquis combined to strikeout 14 Canaan batters, while Schichtle accounted for 14 strikeouts of his own.
