The Arlington Eagles did not play like a 12-seed that had won only 6 games all year last Wednesday. Arlington slowed the pace of the game to a near stall against the Canaan Eagles, and got some timely outside shooting down the stretch to pull off the upset and end the season early for Canaan. With Arlington taking chunks of time off the clock with each possession, points were hard to come as it was difficult for either team to establish any sort of offensive rhythm. A late three-pointer was the difference for Arlington, who came out on top 30-29.
The first quarter crawled by with both teams struggling to find and make shots. Arlington spread the court and spent most of the quarter passing the ball around the perimeter of the Canaan zone defense. When the quarter ended, only 10 points had been scored, with Arlington holding a 6-4 lead.
The Eagles began to find shots in the second quarter, outscoring Arlington 13-6 to regain the lead. Connor Daley had the hot hand, nailing a pair of three-pointers to open up the lead for the Eagles. Arlington continued to sit on the ball, and stalled the final two minutes of the half away despite trailing 17-12.
The third quarter went back and forth. The Eagles opened the second half on a 6-0 capped by a pull-up jumper from Zack Daley to increase the lead to double digits. Arlington was not phased, and began chipping back at the lead with outside shooting. After failing to hit a three-pointer in the first half, Arlington would connect with several shots from behind the arc to get back in the game.
As the game winded down, it was apparent that this match would take all 32 minutes to decide a winner. Arlington completed the comeback midway through the fourth quarter, tying the game at 27-27. The Eagles would take the lead back on a Zack Daley free throw. After several possessions with no points, Arlington called timeout with the ball and 20 seconds remaining in the game.
The Eagles defense stepped up and forced a turnover, as the ball dribbled out of bounds off an Arlington player with less than 10 seconds left. Connor Daley was fouled on the subsequent play, and went to the line to shoot 1-and-1. After connecting on the first free throw, Daley missed the second and Arlington called timeout. Still with a foul to give, the Canaan philosophy was to foul after letting a few precious seconds run off the clock. However, when Daley closed in on the Arlington ball handler near half court to give a foul, the corner was left open. Arlington would retake the lead after a three-pointer was banked in off the backboard. A second was put back on the clock, giving the Eagles one final chance, but Connor Daley's desperation heave from three-quarters court went off the front of the rim.
The heartbreaking loss marked the final games in the varsity careers of 7 Canaan seniors: Connor Daley, Zack Daley, Jake Smith, Jason Charest, Jeremy Schichtle, Dan Kenny, and TJ Hill. |
