The K Kids are a relatively new group in the Canaan Schools system. After the a Builder's Club was instituted for community service inclined middle schoolers, a similar program was launched in the elementary school. Headed by sixth grade teacher Kathy Smith, the K Kids are the youngest group of volunteers striving to improve their community, basically a miniature version of the Key Club. Despite their small stature, the 25 K Kids from grades 3-6 are having a big impact on the community.
The children make a monthly visit to the Coos County Nursing Home to spend time with the residents and participate in numerous activities with them. For their December visit, the K Kids baked batches of cookies and delivered them to the residents for a holiday surprise.
The goal of the K Kids is to help those in need throughout the community while encouraging others to become involved in community service. The group plans on continuing their visits to the nursing home once a month, and will take an active role in Green-Up day this spring.
