STUDENT COUNCIL

The Student Council is a student-led club that convenes to discuss issues pertinent to the student body of Canaan Memorial High School. Math teacher Jim Grittner is advising a group of 14 this year, with the assistance of President Jake Smith and Vice President Jason Charest. Mr. Grittner would like the entire student body to know that new members are always welcome to the Student Council.

The highlight of the school year for the Student Council is planning Spring Fling, an annual field day in which classes compete against one another in various activities for school-wide bragging rights. The Class of 2008 will look to repeat as Spring Fling champions when the event is held in late May or early June. Activities incorporated into the Spring Fling schedule include: ultimate frisbee, kickball, competitive eating, fire-starting, trivia, and strategy games, to name just a few.

In addition to the meticulous planning of Spring Fling, the Student Council has founded a school store in the high school. The store sells school supplies such as notebooks and pencils, as well as sugar-free chewing gum. The store ensures that students can always have something to write on and with, and will never fall victim to bad breath after lunch.

The Student Council has also looked into hosting a benefit show to raise money for a school in Guatemala. Vice President Charest is attempting to contact comedian and Vermont native Rusty DeWees about the possibility of returning to CMHS and performing.
