When the school year began at Canaan Memorial High School, the course of studies was surprisingly limited. After former music teacher Jim Chlebak accepted another teaching position just before the summer's end, the position was left vacant heading into the beginning of the school year. Through the immense volunteer efforts of various other staff members, those students interested in music were able to band together to perform at a winter concert in December. But now, after a one semester hiatus, the music program has made its triumphant return.
Ms. Alison Arter will now head the music department here at CMHS. Ms. Arter is originally from Delaware, Ohio, a small town just beyond the city limits of Columbus. She first realized her desire to become an educator through interaction with her elementary teachers. "I had wonderful teachers in grade school and I was inspired by them." Ms. Arter went on to say that she enjoyed working and sharing music with children of all ages.
Ms. Arter began her college career as a veterinary major, but promptly switched to music education after her first year. She graduated from Indiana University at Pennsylvania with her degree in music education earlier this year. Being fresh out of college, and this being her first teaching job, Ms. Arter says she is "lucky to have the opportunity to be here". The friendly atmosphere, diverse student body, and "neat" environment were just a few reasons among many that Ms. Arter chose to teach in Canaan.
In addition to the traditional band, chorus, and elementary classes, Ms. Arter will also be teaching a General Music course to interested high school students beginning next semester. "I am excited about teaching because everyone has been welcoming and the kids are lots of fun!" When asked to describe her experience thus far in the building, Ms. Arter responded with an enthusiastic "WONDERFUL!"
