After a hotly contested match earlier this month, the Alexander Galt Pipers were able to once again upend a fiery Canaan team. The Pipers were able to dig into the muddy field and hold their positions long enough to earn a 2-0 victory. Two first half goals were the difference in this match, as the Canaan offense threatened, but never converted.
Galt opened the scoring relatively early in the match. A bouncing ball in the goalie's box led to a muddy scrum in front of Canaan goalkeeper Jake Smith. Within the pileup of flailing legs, a Galt player was able to punch a shot just past the outstretched fingers of Smith. The wet field caused the ball to skip and run, making it difficult for either offense to get shots on goal. However, the Pipers were able to take advantage of their chances, netting a second goal just before half.
As the field conditions worsened, the flow of the game slowed to that of molasses in January. Quality shots were difficult to come by, leading to many ill-fated attempts from outside of normal shooting range. Canaan had a few chances late, but could not convert on any of the Piper's misplays. Both Zack and Connor Daley attempted to score on direct kicks from just outside the box, but both shots were turned away with diving saves.
The loss puts the Eagles below .500 for the first time this season with a record of 3-4. Canaan needs to regroup quickly, as they travel to Concord on Saturday to face an upstart Wildcat squad looking to avenge an early season overtime loss at the hands of the Eagles.
