Trojans Trump Eagles

The Twinfield Trojans used a quick flurry of first-half goals to get past the Canaan Eagles 3-1 Thursday. Canaan struggled on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball in the early going, and the Trojans took advantage of every miscue. Despite outplaying the Trojans in the second half, the early deficit proved to be too much for Canaan.

The scoring opened with controversy. A questionable call in the goalie's box resulted in a penalty kick and an early goal for the Trojans. Twinfield built upon the advantage on a defensive breakdown minutes later. The inability of the Canaan fullbacks to clear the ball from the zone resulted in a soft garbage goal for the scrappy Trojan attack. Sensing a let down in the Eagles' composure, Twinfield pushed another goal in before halftime on a textbook cross and header.

The Eagles were visibly upset with their performance in the first half and came out of the break with fire. The defense tightened, creating more opportunities for the offense on the other end. Unfortunately, the Eagles front line could not get a shot past Trojan goalkeeper Royal Healy, who was solid the entire match save for one shot. With only ten minutes remaining, Zack Daley lined up a shot from 30 yards out. The shot seemed to catch Healy off guard, and whistled into the back of the net to void the potential shutout.

The disappointing loss drops the Eagles record to 6-7 with the season finale coming Saturday against UCA.

This match marked the final home game for 10 Canaan seniors: Dan Kenny, John Curtis, Jeremy Schichtle, Ethan Lea, Tyler Brousseau, Jason Charest, Jake Smith, Connor Daley, Zack Daley, and Tony Graves.
