Canaan Girls Drop Heartbreaker in Opener
It may have been the first game of the season for both Canaan and Craftsbury, but the offenses were in mid-season form. Those who enjoy defense would have found this one hard to watch, as a combined thirteen goals were pumped in before the final whistle. In the end, the Craftsbury Chargers came out on top by a score of 7-6.
The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead within the first ten minutes of the match, getting goals from Annick Marquis and Danielle Harris in the fourth and sixth minutes respectively. The Chargers were not phased and came roaring back to score two goals of their own to tie the game with fifteen minutes still remaining in the half. Canaan regained the lead for a short period of time, as Vicky Harris netted a goal in the 27th minute to put her team ahead 3-2, but the final ten minutes were dominated by the Chargers' offense. A trio of goals in the final six minutes of the half gave Craftsbury the 5-3 advantage heading to intermission.
In a game filled with offensive streaks and runs, a brief fifteen minute scoring lull took place to open the half before the ball began finding the back of the net again. Canaan would have the first streak of goals in the second half, scoring three times in a three minute span to once again regain the lead. Marquis scored her second goal of the match seventeen minutes in to bring the Eagles within a goal. Brittany Fuller tied the game a minute later on a penalty shot, and Marquis added her third goal to put Canaan ahead 6-5.
However, it appeared the Eagles left too much time on the clock again. The Chargers would bring the match to a third tie in the 54th minute when a redirected cross found its way past Canaan goalkeeper Miranda Havalotti. The game-winning goal was added four minutes later, putting the Chargers ahead for good, 7-6.
Despite out-shooting the Chargers and the hat-trick from Marquis in her first varsity match, the Eagles came up just short. They will look to rebound and notch their first win on the young season in their home opener Friday against Pittsburg.
