Pittsburg Downs Canaan

In the first meeting between these two teams, Canaan narrowly edged out a 2-1 victory at home. Pittsburg was able to avenge that loss on their home turf by defeating the Lady Eagles 1-0. Canaan was again playing with only eleven players, but it was not a matter of being out manned that led to the loss. An early strike by the Panthers gave them the lead that would never be relinquished. Canaan's offense could do little to penetrate the Panther defense, as scoring opportunities were held to minimum.

Danielle Nonamaker scored the first and only goal of this match in the ninth minute of action. Nonamaker lined up a shot from the corner of the goalie's box, and was able to drive it past Canaan goalkeeper Miranda Havalotti. Pittsburg kept the pressure on, out-shooting the Lady Eagles 8-4 in the first half. Nonamaker and Laura Marquis led the Panther attack, combining for six shots on goal. Canaan had trouble getting shots from close range, as their best scoring chances were shots from distance by Paige Marchand.

Pittsburg kept continued the stingy defensive play in the second half, limiting Canaan to two shots in the final forty minutes. The Panther offense threatened, but was unable to put an additional goal past Havalotti. Panther goalkeeper Rebecca Marquis saved all five shots that were put on goal on her way to a shutout.

The tough loss for the Lady Eagles drops their record to 4-7-1 with only two games remaining.
