Canaan Outlasts Pittsburg for First Win
Coming off a devastating loss, the Canaan girls were on a mission to get their first win of the season in front of their hometown crowd. After netting six goals in a losing effort in Craftsbury, the Eagles found themselves locked in a defensive struggle in their home opener. Despite the balmy weather, the Eagles were able to outlast the Panthers for a 2-1 victory.
Canaan wasted no time getting on the board in this one. Danielle Harris opened the scoring in the second minute by putting home a rebound off the hands of Pittsburg goalkeeper Rebecca Marquis. Raelene Begin pushed the Canaan lead to two goals in the seventeenth minute off another rebound. Both defenses would hold steady for the remainder of the half, the score still 2-0 Canaan.
The back and forth play would continue throughout the final half. In the 49th minute, the Pittsburg attack finally broke through the defense. Laura Marquis would push through the fullback line and net the goal, bringing the score to 2-1. The final thirty minutes saw few shots, as both sides had trouble moving the ball towards the opponent's goal.
The Canaan defense would hold and preserve the victory. Goalkeeper Miranda Havalotti had a stellar game in the net, saving ten shots while allowing only one to sneak behind her. The win was the first for the Lady Eagles, who now stand at a 1-1 on the season.
