Trojans Pull Away Late to Defeat Lady Eagles

The Canaan girls have fallen upon hard times. With the injuries piling up, Canaan has been forced at times to play with only ten girls on the field at a time in order to have one player available for substitution. However, the Eagles got a lift before the game when senior Danielle Harris announced she would play limited minutes in her final home game. Despite the return of Harris, the Lady Eagles were unable to keep up with Twinfield in the second half. A close game at half, the Trojans opened it up with five second-half goals en route to a 6-1 victory.

Twinfield struck first, as Betsy Martin scored in the tenth minute after the ball was fumbled by Canaan goalkeeper Miranda Havalotti. The Lady Eagles were not discouraged by the goal, and were able to grab the equalizer in the 27th minute when Annick Marquis pushed the ball through the defense, scoring unassisted to tie the score. Both defenses held tight for the remainder of the half, and this match went into the break knotted at a goal a piece.

The final score was not indicative of how close this match was. Canaan Coach Tim Gray lamented that his team "missed several chances to score" in addition to a missed penalty kick. Twinfield capitalized on the momentum shift in a big way. Marisa Hurlbert scored two second-half goals in a span of fifteen minutes. Between Hurlbert's goals, Martin added her second of the match. What had been a 1-1 game at the half was quickly 4-1 in Twinfield's favor. Elsa Raker squashed any chance of a comeback with a goal in the 60th minute. A late goal from Camille DuPont capped off the Trojan scoring.

The loss puts Canaan at an unenviable 4-8-1 with one game remaining.

This match was the final home game for 3 Canaan seniors: Heather Noyes, Miranda Havalotti, and Danielle Harris.
