Canaan Takes Down UCA

Two second half goals broke a scoreless deadlock in this match and gave Canaan the 2-0 victory over the UCA Crusaders. After failing to score a goal in their previous two contests, the Eagles' offense was able to apply constant pressure to the UCA back line and snag a pair of goals. While the offense often gets the praise, it was the solid defense and goal-keeping that was the key to victory for the Lady Eagles. The shutout was the first of the season for the Canaan fullbacks and goalie Miranda Havalotti, who stopped every shot she faced.

The opening half came and went with little happening on either side. The evenly matched teams struggled to get the ball into their offensive zones, as the midfield contained most of the action. The few scoring opportunities for each team were quickly denied by stellar defense and the match went to the half scoreless.

The Crusaders appeared to tire as the second half wore on, and the Lady Eagles wasted no time taking advantage. In the 49th minute, Sam Fortin sent a cross towards the middle of the goalie's box, where Annick Marquis was waiting. Marquis poked the ball past the diving goalie to put her team ahead 1-0. The Canaan attack persisted, but was unable to expand their lead until the 78th minute. Vicky Harris, playing at right wing in place of her injured sister Danielle, dribbled through the UCA defense and squeaked a shot into the corner of the goal. With less than two minutes remaining, the Harris goal sealed the match and victory for the Lady Eagles.

The win snapped a small two-game losing skid for Canaan, whose record now stands at 2-3.
