After losing to the Colebrook Mohawks 12-0 in the season opener, the Canaan Eagles were heavy underdogs coming into this match-up. The Eagles hung tough and got a strong pitching performance from Annick Marquis, but fell just short. The Mohawks stifled a late Canaan rally to hold on for the 5-3 win.
As the case has usually been this season, the top of the Mohawks line-up did the damage. Colebrook got to Marquis for two runs in the first inning to claim the early lead. After a quiet second inning, the Eagles would get on the board and cut the Colebrook lead to a single run.
Both teams played clean, fundamental softball, as only two total errors were committed during the game. As the game wore on, it was apparent that this game would be won by whichever team came up with a big hit. Luckily for Colebrook, they have the big bat of Mackenzie Brooks. With a runner on in the fourth inning, Brooks crushed a two-run homer to give her team a 4-1 lead.
That was all the run support that Mohawks starter Tonya Smith would need. Smith allowed only three hits and three runs over five innings of work.
Things got interesting in the sixth inning, when the Eagles's offense began to come alive. Marquis again sliced the Mohawk lead in half with a two-run single to make the score 5-3. The Eagles could not keep momentum going in the seventh, and came up two runs short.
The loss puts the Eagles at 4-8 on the season.
