After suffering two handy defeats in a doubleheader in Thetford last week, the Canaan Eagles responded with a big win over the Craftsbury Chargers. After failing to score in their previous two games, the Canaan offense erupted for their best performance of the season. The offensive production came from the top to the bottom of the Canaan order. A titanic twelve-run third inning propelled the Eagles past the scrappy Chargers for a 25-8 win.
Offense was not at a premium in this one, as both teams came roaring out of the gates. Both teams swapped runs in the first inning before the Eagles began to distance themselves. A big second inning saw the Eagles score five times, and jump out to a nice lead.
The third inning was the dagger for Craftsbury. The Eagles successfully batted around without making a single out. The first nine batters of the inning came around to score. Despite the disastrous inning, the Chargers tried their best to extend the game, staying within the fifteen-run threshold after the fifth inning.
However, the Eagles continued to pour of the runs in the sixth, and put this game away. Annick Marquis, after struggling with her delivery and control, struck out five in six innings to pick up the win. Marquis also drove in six runs with her five hits at the plate.
The Eagles had plenty of stars on the offensive side. Paige Marchand drove in five on the power of three hits. Melinda Jones also had five hits, including two doubles. Becky Lienau was a menace of the base-paths, scoring five runs.
Canaan now sports a level record on the season at 4-4.
