The Groveton Eagles put on an offensive display in Canaan Monday afternoon, scoring a total 32 runs in the twin bill. Perhaps more impressive was the Groveton pitching, as the McKenzie sisters, Jessica and Crystal, limited the Canaan bats to just seven hits and three runs over the two games. The Purple Eagles were able to jump out to quick leads in both games, and cruise to two fourteen-run victories; 15-1 in the opener, and 17-3 in the nightcap.
The first game pitted the elder McKenzie, Crystal, against Canaan freshman Annick Marquis. Marquis regained her control after a shaky outing last week in Pittsburg, but saw the Groveton lineup rack up fourteen hits. The Purple Eagles came out of the gates strong, scoring five times in the first inning. Canaan would not go away, and stretched this game to seven innings, but a four-run Groveton outburst put this game out of reach.
The lone Canaan run was scored in the fourth inning. Katelyn Cloutier belted a home run for Groveton and led the offensive attack.
The Canaan Eagles recently learned that they would be without the services of pitcher Kaitlyn Pariseau for a few weeks after she injured her knee. Without Pariseau, Canaan was forced to reach for pitching depth. Nicole Flagg took the mound for her first appearance of the season against Jessica McKenzie. Flagg had trouble finding the strike zone, walking nine batters, but got little support in the field. Canaan committed three costly errors that allowed rallies to continue for Groveton.
After scoring two runs in the first inning, Groveton exploded for six runs in the second and eight runs in the fourth. Katelyn Cloutier smashed another home run, her second in as many games. Canaan managed only three hits, but two were good for home runs, as Danielle Harris and Paige Marchand both went deep.
Canaan's record drops to 4-7 on the season.
