Canaan Vision 2028

Please take our community survey

The Canaan Vision 2028 Committee would like your help. Please take a few minutes to fill out our Community Survey. This data will help us develop our new Vision for Canaan Schools, and will inform our strategic planning over the coming years.

Paper copies of the survey will be available in locations around town. If you would like us to mail you a copy, please reach out to the school and request one. Our next opportunity to provide feedback will come at our community lunch and forum, which will take place on February 4th.

Nicole Jeralds
Fifth Grade Teacher

Our staff corner this month is highlighting our fifth grade teacher, Ms Nicole Jeralds. Nicole joined the Canaan Staff in 2017, and over the last few years has taken part in the Vermont Rural Education Collaborative Mini-grant program. VREC mini-grants go towards paying for student-led projects within schools in Northeastern Vermont. This year Ms Jeralds class will be creating carts stocked with supplies to be used at the school’s family outreach events. The representatives from VREC in charge of awarding the grants said that Canaan’s fifth graders had the best pitch of any group this year. Kudos to Ms Jeralds and the Fifth Grade for their hard work.

Kaitlyn Wood
Librarian

I would like to introduce our newest staff member, Kaitlin Wood.

Kaitlin started as our school librarian at the beginning of October, and has had a great start. She is a native of Lancaster, New Hampshire and received her BA in Literature from Middlebury, and a Masters in Library and Information Science from Rutgers. She has been working at the Colebrook Public Library for the last couple of years, but we are happy she has decided to join us here at Canaan Schools.

Student Service Days

In keeping with the theme of honoring the members of our armed services, the students of Canaan Memorial High School will be taking part in two days of service this year, one to coincide with Veterans day, and one to coincide with Memorial day. Students will remember the men and women who served our nation by “paying it forward” and serving their local community. We will be spending these days doing community service projects, and if you have a project that we may be able to help with, please reach out to Chris Damato at [email protected] or Chuck Patterson at [email protected]

In the coming weeks we will have our first school intruder drill. This drill will be instructional based, and school staff will be leading age appropriate discussions with their students about what to do in the case of a school intruder. Drills and conversations of this nature can often cause anxiety in students. It is important to talk to your children as they process these events.

Remembering Our POWs and MIAs

On Friday, September 16th, our students and staff gathered in the gym for a special presentation. Members of the American Legion Post 47 came to our school to perform a ceremony of remembrance for our countries POW and MIA soldiers.

Canaan Memorial High School is one of the few schools in the country that has a POW and MIA memorial on school grounds. During the presentation the students and staff of Canaan learned the meaning of each part of the memorial, and why it is so important to keep these men and women in our thoughts and our hearts.

Thank you to all the members of Post 47 for helping to make this special moment happen.
