Scholarships

Many scholarships are available for students who plan to continue their studies after graduation. Please look at the opportunities below and contact the counseling office if you have questions.

The Abner & Rita Ladd Memorial Scholarship was established to honor many of our family members who attended CMHS and went on to college or pursued trade/vocational programs. 

Criteria:

  • A graduating senior of CMHS
  • A good student that tries their best
  • Active in the community and volunteers
  • Positive role model and school spirit
  • Participates in extracurricular activities
  • Looking to attend a 2- or 4-year college or pursue a trade/vocational program

Application Procedure:

Submit a letter of interest to the Guidance Office addressing the above criteria.

SelectionThe Scholarship Committee will decide who receives the scholarship.

Award Amount: $500.00 at graduation

  • Student must be attending the military OR a school of higher education
  • Student must exemplify EXCELLENCE, including:
                Excellent personal character
                Excellent service to the community
                Excellent academic record

Selection: The recipient will be chosen by the Executive Committee for the Northland Post #47 of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Presentation: Scholarship will be presented at graduation

Application Procedure:

  • Submit a letter of intent to the Guidance Office that:
    • addresses the criteria mentioned above
    • explores plans after high school           

Award Amount: TBD on an annual basis.  The scholarship will be given directly to the student (if entering the military) or paid directly to the school that the student is enrolled in after successful completion of the first semester.

  • A written application must be made by the student who wishes to be considered for the scholarship.  This application must state why the student is furthering his/her education and how they feel they have met the criteria listed above.

Available to young men and women who attend a Vermont secondary school or Interstate school district serving Vermont students. Parents must be legal residents of Vermont. Applicant must be a U.S. resident.

Scholarship Information

Criteria:

  • Student must be a Senior from Canaan Memorial High School
  • Has participated in music and intends to continue participation in some sort of school musical experience
  • In the event that the aforementioned criteria is not able to be met, the award may go to a student of any of the fine arts.

Selection Committee: The selection committee is to be made up of school staff.

Presentation: Scholarship will be presented at graduation

Application Procedure:

  • Submit a letter of intent to the Guidance Office, commenting on the criteria mentioned above.            

Award Amount: $100.00

  • Student needs to be of moral character and in good scholastic standing
  • Student has plans to continue their education at a post-secondary institution
  • Student must have attended CMHS for no less than two years or be a graduate (or soon to be a graduate) of CMHS

Application Procedure: Students interested in applying for this award must submit a letter of application. The letter should include the following:

  • a statement that they would like to be considered for the scholarship
  • a statement about the student’s future plans

Each year the Canaan Women’s Club offers a  $500 scholarship for Alumnus and $500 or more for a Graduate who plan on attending (or continuing) college.  The scholarships are based on anticipated success in post-secondary education, community service and financial need.

Scholarship applications must include:

  • Application with essays
  • Financial Aid award letter
  • Transcript
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Letter of acceptance from the college or university you plan on attending.

The Carrie Jones Lund Scholarship was established in 1956 from the will of Carrie V. Lund, a revered townswoman from Canaan.

Criteria:

  • Must be a graduating senior or an alumnus of CMHS
  • Student does NOT have to be a Vermont resident
  • Student must be planning on attending (or is currently attending) a post-secondary institution in the state of Vermont
  • Must have a good academic record

Application Procedure:
The recipient of this scholarship is selected by the Superintendent of Schools and the Canaan School Board. Students interested in applying for this scholarship need to submit:

  • letter of interest
  • list of activities/accomplishments

The Essex North Education Association, a local affiliate of Vermont-NEA, is proud to represent the men and women who make a difference in the lives of students in the Canaan Schools.  In keeping with our support of North Country youth, ENEA will award one or two scholarships to graduating seniors.

  • Be a graduating senior from Canaan Memorial High School
  • Be accepted to study at a college or university

Honoring the legacy and character of our national's 40th president, the scholarship rewards college-bound students who show exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship.

The program selects numerous recipients to receive a $10,000 scholarship renewable for up to an additional three years.

Scholarship Information

History: The Harvey Boynton Memorial Scholarship was established in 2000.  He genuinely respected education and enjoyed watching the athletic programs of the Canaan School system.  He wanted young people to continue pursuing their education after the completion of high school.  He gave himself unconditionally to help his fellow man and found humor in most situations.

It is our wish to assist young people pursuing a secondary education, primarily, but not limited to art education and physical education.  He was especially proud that his daughter was an educator in the field of art.  Special consideration should also be taken when a relative of either Harvey or Annette Boynton is graduating.

Award: A scholarship of $200 will be available for an annual scholarship.  If no student meets eligibility requirements, the money will be added to the principle.

Eligibility: Any Canaan School senior who has been accepted at a college or university and has attended the Canaan School for 4 years (priority will remain as stated above) may apply.  Selection shall be based on the following criteria:

The Hagan Scholarship is a nationwide need-based merit scholarship designed to help rural students graduate college debt-free. The scholarship provides up to $48,000 over four years. Eligible students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or above.

This scholarship has been set up with proceeds from Kenneth Kirkland Hann’s estate.  He was an avid supporter of local sports and education.  The family would like his memory preserved by awarding an annual scholarship, minimum of $1,000.00, to a deserving senior entering a field related to education. 

Criteria:

  • A resident of the Canaan School District
  • Financial need
  • Love of helping others
  • Entering the field of education or a related career: occupational/speech therapy, school counseling

Submit a letter of interest to the Guidance Office addressing the above criteria.

Criteria: Student must be a graduating senior or a CMHS Alumnus.

Application Procedure:

Students interested in applying for this award must submit a letter to the Guidance Office that includes the following:

  • The name of the college the student will be attending
  • Their need for financial assistance
  • Their academic ranking in the graduating class
  • The community activities they have participated in during their high school years
  • A statement concerning why they want to further their education

Award Amount:  To be determined

Selection Criteria:  The winning essay will be selected by two faculty members and the Principal.

  • Student must be attending a two-year technical college, a four-year university, or a school of graduate studies.
  • Student must be majoring in nursing, dental hygiene, or other medically oriented courses, business training, as well as other areas where education leads to technical competence.

Selection Criteria:  The School Board will decide who receives the scholarship.

The Margaret Dempsey Lima Memorial Scholarship, established in 2016, is intended to honor and perpetuate fond memories of Margaret Dempsey Lima, beloved educator and human being.

This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who intends to attend any post-secondary academic or vocational program.

The recipient(s) should be an individual who has exhibited good moral character, solid work ethic, and, most importantly, is considered to be a “good person” by their peers and teachers.

Statement to recipient:

Actual disbursement of this scholarship will be made upon submission of proof of successful completion of one segment (semester, year, program, etc.) of your chosen academic or vocational program to the Canaan Town Clerk. 

To apply:

Simply write a letter to Mr. Eugene Reid stating your desire to be considered for this scholarship.

Amount of award:

To be determined by Margaret’s husband Harry Lima and/or members of their immediate family.

Selection process:

The scholarship recipient will be chosen each year by a committee composed of Mr. Eugene Reid, Harry Lima, and others selected by Mr. Reid and Mr. Lima.

Criteria:

  • A graduating senior of CMHS pursuing a career in:
    * Priority given to Emergency Services - Fire;
    * Next would be Emergency Services – EMT or Paramedic;
    * Finally to Medical – Nurse or Doctor.

Award Amount:   $500 payable to the student upon completion of the first semester

  2. A statement about how the student feels they meet the criteria of academic excellence, attitude and leadership.

The Paul F. Biron Memorial Scholarship was established in 2008 in memory of Paul Biron, a graduate of Canaan Schools.  Paul attended the Vermont Technical College and had a life-long interest in carpentry and other forms of occupational education.  This scholarship will provide financial assistance to a graduate form Canaan Schools who is furthering his or her education in a vocational field.

Criteria:

  • Canaan graduates/alumnus looking at some form of vocational training
  • Applicants must submit an essay which includes:
    • a description of future goals
    • plans for furthering his/her education
    • a description of need
    • an explanation of why the applicant is deserving of this award

Selection Criteria:

Completed applications are to be submitted to Mr. Reid who will coordinate a selection meeting with Ms. Fontaine and Mr. Biron’s family.

Logistics of Claiming the award:

This award is to be paid out with proof of registration for the 2nd semester (spring term), or at the completion of a certificate program that meets the approval of the selection committee.

Award Amount:

The amount will be determined annually by Betsy Fontaine and Mr. Biron’s immediate family.

The St. Brendan's Catholic Women's Club offers a $500 scholarship annually to a member of St. Brendan's Church who is a graduating senior. A selection committee will determine the recipient by the first of June. A candidate's selection will be determined by the following criteria:

  • attendance and participation in church activities at St. Brendan's Church

The recipient of the scholarship will be announced at Mass at St. Brendan's Church and the scholarship will be paid at the beginning of the second semester to any post-secondary school.
